Honesty is an important part of any healthy friendship or community. Genuine honesty helps people learn, improve, and grow. However, there is a significant difference between being honest and being hurtful. Sometimes, people claim they are “just being honest” when, in reality, they are using honesty as an excuse to make harsh, judgmental, or unkind remarks. (In other words- a lot of people use honesty as an excuse to act judgemental or mean).
I recently had a friend who often spoke about the importance of honesty. Unfortunately, their comments in our art channels were frequently discouraging and made many of us feel bad about our progress. Rather than offering constructive feedback, they focused on criticism that hurt people's confidence and motivation. Over time, this negative behavior affected the atmosphere of our community, and I eventually decided to cut contact with them.
In our server, we truly value honesty, but we believe it should always be constructive, respectful, and caring. Feedback is most helpful when it encourages growth while also recognizing effort and progress. Kindness and empathy are just as important as truthfulness.
When communicating with friends or fellow community members, please remember to consider their feelings. A thoughtful and supportive approach can make a huge difference. Let us strive to build each other up, offer helpful guidance, and create a welcoming environment where everyone feels respected and encouraged.
