British publisher Astronomica Ltd is developing a wider communications operation that brings together publishing, design, websites, digital infrastructure, public relations and online media.
The company, which was incorporated in 2023, has expanded beyond its initial publishing activities through a series of related projects, including Camelot House Publishing, The Epoch and the recently introduced SALAMANDER web platform.
Astronomica says the different parts of the business are intended to work together rather than function as independent services.
The company's director, Q. G. Wingfield, said the model had developed as Astronomica encountered requirements within its own work and began creating the infrastructure needed to meet them.
“Most of what Astronomica does has grown from encountering something that ought to exist and deciding to build it,” Wingfield said.
“Publishing led into design; design led into websites and communications; those things naturally led into media.”
A wider communications model
Publishing remains an important part of Astronomica's activities. Camelot House Publishing has been used for specialist book projects, while the company has subsequently moved into branding, website development and communications.
SALAMANDER represents another stage of that development. Announced in August, the platform provides web infrastructure that can be used to support websites created through Astronomica's design activities.
The company is now applying the same connected approach to public relations and digital media.
Its developing PR operation is expected to provide press-release publication and distribution for businesses and organisations that need to communicate occasional announcements but may not require a traditional retained PR agency.
Astronomica's approach effectively combines several functions that are normally purchased separately. A single announcement, for example, can involve writing, graphic design, website work, publication, distribution and eventual media coverage.
The company is seeking to provide more of those functions through the same technical and creative infrastructure.
From announcement to editorial coverage
The expansion also creates a distinction between Astronomica's commercial communications work and editorial reporting.
Astronomica says organisations using its commercial services may pay for material to be written, published or distributed, but that payment does not give them control over independently produced editorial coverage of the same subject.
This means an announcement can begin as paid or commercially supplied communications before subsequently becoming a source for editorial reporting.
The distinction is particularly relevant to smaller online publications, where press releases, company announcements and other supplied material can form part of the information used to develop news stories.
Astronomica says its intention is to keep the commercial and editorial functions identifiable while allowing them to exist within the same wider communications ecosystem.
The company plans to continue developing its publishing, communications, PR and media activities throughout 2026.
