October 16th is officially here, which means it is time to put down the controllers, grab an apple pie, and celebrate the birthday of Nekoma High’s genius setter Kenma Kozume!
Whether you first met him as the quiet, video-game-obsessed "pudding head" hiding in the bushes or have been following his journey all the way to his successful adult life, Kenma has easily captured the hearts of Haikyu!! fans worldwide.
To celebrate his special day, let’s take a quick look back at why Kenma remains one of the most compelling characters in the entire series!! ⇣
The Heart and Brains of Nekoma 🏐🐈⬛
Unlike most sports anime characters, Kenma never started out with a burning, fiery passion for volleyball. He didn’t care about being the strongest or working up a sweat. In fact, he famously said he only played because he didn’t want his childhood friend, Kuroo, to feel lonely, and also because he HATED losing.
Yet, his analytical mind turned him into Nekoma’s ultimate weapon. As the "brain" of the team, Kenma didn't need overwhelming physical power. Instead, he treated the volleyball court exactly like a video game, observing his opponents, looking for patterns, predicting their next moves, and figuring out the perfect strategy in order to win.
The Rivalry That Changed Everything 🏐🐈⬛
We can’t talk about Kenma without talking about Shoyo Hinata. Their chance meeting on a quiet street corner sparked one of the greatest dynamic rivalries in anime history.
Hinata’s infectious energy and unpredictable speedy playstyle did something no one else could do: it forced Kenma to actually care. Hinata became a "game" that Kenma couldn't easily solve, leading up to the legendary, emotional "Dumpster Battle" where Kenma, exhausted and lying flat on the floor, finally uttered the words to Tetsuro Kuroo that fans had been waiting years to hear: "Thank you for teaching me volleyball. It’s fun."
Living the Dream: Kodzuken (SPOILERS) 🏐🐈⬛
One of the most satisfying parts of Kenma’s journey is seeing where he ends up. He never lost his core identity. Fast forward to adulthood, and Kenma is thriving as Kodzuken, a famous gaming YouTuber, stock trader, and the wealthy CEO of Bouncing Ball Corp. He even uses his wealth to sponsor Hinata’s training in Brazil, proving that his loyalty to his friends never wavered.
🎉 How are you celebrating today? 🎉🐈⬛🏐
Kenma might prefer a day in his room with his Switch over a massive birthday party, but we can still show him some love!
